ChronoSync overview

ChronoSync is the professional choice for periodic backups, bootable drive clones, and folder and file synchronizations. Target any device or folder visible in Finder such a volume, thumb drive, NAS, disk image, iCloud, select cloud services, server or (with ChronoAgent) another Mac! Directly connect to Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Google Cloud, and iCloud cloud services and SFTP file servers. ChronoSync replaces your backup utility, drive clone utility, and folder sync utility with a single, powerful application. Get push notifications of your syncs sent to your phone with ChronoMonitor. Add InterConneX (free for iOS) and use ChronoSync to push files and folders to your iDevice.

What’s new in version 12.0.0

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • New time and event-based scheduling options.
  • Remote triggering of Sync Tasks from ChronoAgent.
  • Scheduled Task Manager and Organizer Window enhancements.
  • Optional two-pass synchronizer and prioritized deletions.
  • Significant iCloud and File Provider optimizations.
  • Full compatibility with the latest generation macOS Tahoe.
ENHANCEMENTS AND CHANGES:
  • Added the ability to run a two-pass synchronizer with optionally performing deletions first to the ‘Special File/Folder Handling’ section of the ‘Options Panel’.
  • Added Remote/ChronoAgent Triggered scheduler type.
  • Added a ‘Monthly’ (on weekday) scheduler ‘Simple Interval’ type.
  • Added a ‘Yearly’ scheduler ‘Advanced Interval’ type.
  • Enhanced ‘After ChronoSync Launches’ scheduler type.
  • Added support for scheduling Validation runs.
  • Added Custom Scheduler Notification Subjects settings.
  • We now allow sorting by columns in Scheduled Tasks Manager window.
  • Added scheduler suspension reminders.
  • Added the ability to arrange Sync Tasks in the Organizer window by their next scheduled sync time.
  • Added a more detailed display of scheduled run times/events in Scheduled Tasks Manager window.
  • Significantly reworked how iCloud directory contents are asynchronously gathered, in an effort to eliminate a potential crash/hang scenario.
  • Added logic to prevent descending into a folder if it is iCloud or File Provider managed and the source file system is frozen.
  • Added better progress feedback for iCloud and File Provider file operations such as waiting for upload or waiting for eviction.
  • Tweaked how effective download bandwidth limit is calculated in all Cloud Storage connection types.
  • Added a bunch of new AWS S3 endpoints, and removed the Chinese ones.
  • Added logic to coerce TIMEOUT errors to a more meaningful error code if they occurred as a result of dealing with iCloud-stored files.
  • Significantly tweaked the eviction logic to improve performance (iCloud & File Provider connection types).
  • Added significant logic to detect and properly deal with iCloud and File Provider managed files when NOT using a cloud connection type. This includes properly triggering cloud downloads, if possible, and reporting errors when the non-locally stored items cannot be safely dealt with.
  • We now flag File Providers as having inefficient safe copy, thus triggering a Readiness Warning if safe-copy is enabled.
  • Added the ability to locate paths displayed in log messages within the Analyze or Archive panels.
  • Implemented better error message generation to try and display the actual file name instead of the temp filename.
  • The bootable backup assistant now throws up a warning when running on Apple Silicon that states bootable backups may not work on this hardware and that the user should consider a Data Volume backup, instead.
  • Added a new, ignorable readiness error when running on Apple Silicon that states bootable backups may not work on this hardware and that the user should consider a Data Volume backup, instead.
  • The Admin Access Required Readiness test now applies to data Volume backups in addition to Bootable Backups.
  • The Ignore Ownership Readiness test now applies to data Volume backups in addition to Bootable Backups.
  • The Data Volume Readiness test now throws a warning if the destination volume is not APFS formatted.
  • Added readiness warning that discourages ExFAT file systems.
  • When choosing a target, we now dim the ‘Choose’ button after it is clicked to provide instant feedback when there is a high latency to display the Target Selector.
  • Enhanced the ‘Description’ displayed on the Target Pane to better identify the location of Data volume targets.
  • Enhanced archive handling to provide a better description of a custom archive location when the archive volume is not mounted.
  • Added ability to manually mount archive volumes.
  • Added logic that executes at termination to check if there are any minimized windows with sheet windows attached to them. If so, it de-minimizes them and aborts the termination so the user can dismiss the sheet(s).
  • Implemented better feedback and perceived responsiveness to user pauses during file copies.
  • Added logic to create a backup copy of Application Support/ChronoSync on first launch of ChronoSync 12 (only when a previous version of ChronoSync has been launched before).
  • Changed default copy buffer sizes to 2 MB.
  • Added corespeech/caches to the bootable/data volume blacklist.
  • Added an automatic SmartScan reset if it has been too long since the last SmartScan sync was performed.
  • We now track unmounted volumes in the volume caches to increase volume enumeration performance.
  • We no longer allow a temp file created by ChronoSync for safe copy purposes to be marked for synchronization. Deletions are allowed and the user can manually delete the file as well. If they really want to copy such a file, they’ll have to rename it so it doesn’t conform to the .CSXXX nomenclature.
  • Added thousands separators to the Progress Sheet.
  • Updated online help.
  • Now sorts the list of installed mail bridges.
  • Added mail bridges for Airmail, Mailmate and Outlook.
  • Removed mail bridges for old email clients.
BUG FIXES:
  • Fixed a bug in all the modifier Setup Assistants whereby the activity status table could clip the last entry.
  • Fixed a bug when displaying the ‘Next run’ summary for a scheduled item that was not factoring out the current minute.
  • Fixed a bug that could fail to correctly set the path when dragging targets between Sync Task documents.
  • Fixed a bug whereby quitting the application with an open editor field in the Settings window would fail to save that value to Settings.
  • Eliminated the use of numerous, deprecated APIs.
  • Fixed numerous display glitches when running on macOS Tahoe.
  • Eliminated optional use of Core Animation (we always use it now).
  • We now force a re-registration with the push notification server every 15 minutes and after a system wake.
  • Fixed a bug whereby if the PrintInfo record was not encoded in a document, it would never get recreated.
  • Fixed some accessibility bugs related to the rolling credits.
  • Fixed a bug whereby file system live triggers were not compatible with the File Provider connection type.
  • Fixed a bug whereby progress messages from a previous target task operation would be carried forward to new target task operations.
  • Implemented a workaround for an OS bug whereby attempting to set certain super-user POSIX perms flags causes a crash on macOS Sequoia and newer.
  • Fixed a bug whereby an exception raised when refreshing children of an archive node would not get caught.
  • Changed some logic regarding the display of the Organizer Window on application launch. It would never display if it were launched in the background, which apparently happens on Tahoe after installation.
  • Added some protection so that several methods do not execute when a document close is in progress in an effort to eliminate some crash scenarios.
  • Fixed a bug whereby attempts to startup the file provider monitor would be indefinitely repeated if there were no file providers installed.
  • Added logic that would prevent attempts to set certain POSIX flags that could cause the remote InterConneX to crash on iOS 26.
  • Added more robust detection of whether or not we are currently reloading children before trying to update the display of entires, in an effort to eliminate a crash scenario.
  • Added logic to safeguard against an exception being thrown when saving a sync tree to disk and the contents of the directory in that sync tree is modified while it was being saved.

Uninstalled it a few years back on a old Mac that was short on space. Needed a copy of a 4tb drive and remembered this, they sent me a link to reinstall it, it worked great very

Most used App that I have ever purchased. I have been using ChronoSync since my first MacBook Pro in 2008 and now using it on my 2022 M1 MacBook Pro. Keeps all my files in sync between my three computers and my NAS drive. Best money I've ever spent and they provide lifetime upgrades. Thank You!!

1) I recently tested ChronoSync against Carbon Copy Cloner on a non-system backup and ChronoSync was way faster. 2) I often had a hard time syncing to another Mac and only recently used ChronoAgent (to be installed on the destination Mac) and it really made the grade! The only downside I could find is that it's not always obvious to find the correct settings in specific situations, but once you have it's great.

It is very thorough and secure, the setting options are excellent, it doesn't break once a file is not copyable. In this way, it helps enormously to perform good backup and even data recovery. It is worthwhile to get acquainted with it in care of the data. Looks like the Rolls-Royce of sync programs. Support is responsive if really needed.

If you upgrade to CS 10, please note. The format for Tasks that you define has been upgraded to support new features. WHen you run a task for the first time after updating to 10 you will be prompted to Confirm if you want to update file format for the task to new 10 format. Once converted that task can't be loaded or run in older version of CS If you only have one copy of CS and don't intend to revert back to older version, you should be okay to Confirm yes. If you have multiple copies of CS or share tasks across Mac or other people (like on a network) and they haven't upgraded to CS 10, you may NOT want to convert to new format. I upgraded to CS 10 and latest CAgent 2 and have had no issues at all, including backups to cloud storage (BackBlaze B2 and Amazon)

I downloaded the trial version of ChronoSync a couple of days ago and I didn't need the 15 day evaluation period to make my decision. This software is awesome; easy to use, doesn't bog down my iMac (like Time Machine used to), it's just a rock solid product in my opinion. Well worth the price. I've only been using it for a few days and feel I've got my money's worth out of it already. I just wanted to be able to select the files I want to back up and then schedule the process at a time of my choosing, which can't easily be done on a Mac. It's a piece of cake to do that on a Windows PC using a batch file and the Task Scheduler, but even that is not as simple as the ChronoSync process. I had my backup setup and scheduled in about 15 minutes and I didn't even need the Help file. Can you do it on a Mac? Yeah, but how? Install third party apps to work with Time Machine? Or run scripts using Terminal? Uuuuuuhhh... No. I don't think so. I truly appreciate all of the hard work you've put into developing this valuable utility. It's exactly what I was hoping for. Thank you for simplifying the process of backing up my iMac. M. Jenkins
